Coaching Tip #29

Posted by

29 - watch the players

Tagged – Practice Management

When we teach the players how to read the game, we tell them where to look. To my knowledge, no one ever tells the coach where to look. Or perhaps it is so obvious that no one ever needs to be told. Sometimes you have to say the obvious things out loud.

When we teach blockers what to watch, we tell them to watch setter or spiker depending on the point of the action. Specifically we tell them that after we have determined the flight path the ball it can give us no more information.

Exactly the same logic applies to the coach. After you have determined its flight path, the ball can give us no further information. All of the information on techniques, movements, tactics comes to you from the players. That is where your eyes must be focused.

If you want to give better feedback, or understand the game better, watch the players.
